This past weekend, I was lucky enough to attend the D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif. The trip was a great deal of fun – I heard updates on New Fantasyland, saw an amazing rendering of Shanghai Disneyland’s Enchanted Storybook Castle, and oh yeah, visited Disneyland park for the first time.

I grew up vacationing at the Walt Disney World Resort and have been lucky enough to visit Disneyland Paris twice, but I’d never been to the Disneyland Resort, so I jumped at the chance to attend this year’s D23 Expo.

I promised my team I’d share some of my first-trip highlights with all of you, so as we like to say at Disney Parks, “Let the Memories Begin!”

1. Visiting Disneyland Park – Each Disney park is uniquely wonderful in its own way, but in this case, there’s just something about being at the first park, the one that Walt Disney himself introduced to the world and forever changed the way many of us vacation, imagine and dream. I had the best time just strolling through the park, enjoying the attractions Walt would’ve seen, and trying to pick out buildings that looked familiar from park’s opening-day broadcast.

2. Experiencing the original Pirates of the Caribbean – I was lucky enough to try out several of the park’s classic attractions on this trip, including The Haunted Mansion, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, “it’s a small world” and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, but I just fell in love with this version of Pirates. It starts out a bit differently, with a gentle coast through the Blue Bayou, then a drop underground through caverns brimming with pirate treasure. A second plunge brings you to the scenes that Magic Kingdom Park fans would recognize – pirate ships, blasting canons, the bride auction, and of course, Captain Jack.

3. Hosting a live-chat from Club 33 – Last Thursday night, my fellow authors, Thomas Smith, Jim Ames, Erin Glover and I were very fortunate to do a live tweet from Disneyland park’s Club 33. While I was amazed with every aspect of this unforgettable dining experience, I was equally pleased to see our messages get retweeted in Chinese, Japanese and Spanish. (I think the photo above was the only time my hands weren’t on a computer).

4. Attending “World of Color” – On the last night of our trip, Thomas and I were able to break away from the D23 Expo for a viewing of “World of Color” at Disney California Adventure park. As you can see from the photo above, it was simply amazing! And Mickey’s Fun Wheel makes one heck of a background to the show.

5. Gaining at least five pounds – I have to admit I’m a quite a foodie, so when Disney Parks Blog Food Author Pam Brandon sent me a list of must-try restaurants for my first trip, I was up for the challenge – to hit all of them! Pam sent me on a true tour through culinary destinations big and small that ranged from Corndog Castle (best crispy corndogs ever, according to Pam), to Napa Rose (best wine selection), Blue Bayou (best New Orleans-style chow), and beyond.

Getting Ready for Disneyland Park to Debut – A Look Back at July 17, 1955

Fifty-six years ago today, Walt Disney read the inspiring words on this plaque during the official dedication of Disneyland park. Across the country, an estimated 90 million television viewers were watching an unprecedented live broadcast of the day’s festivities on ABC.

Around the time of our anniversary each year, I see a photo of Walt which is often erroneously described as a photo taken during the opening ceremony. Perhaps you have seen this photo too.

Have you ever noticed that Walt is not wearing his necktie in this picture? That’s because this is actually a photo taken during a rehearsal for the telecast. The photos we have that were taken during the official dedication were taken from the side.

Now, it’s been said that practice makes perfect, but if you’ve ever had the pleasure of watching our opening day television special, “Dateline Disneyland,” you know this isn’t always true. The live broadcast was the largest of its kind ever attempted and included 24 separate cameras. Naturally, in such a huge undertaking, there had to be some rehearsal to ensure things would run as smoothly as possible, and we have some more fun photos from the earlier “run-through” of the day’s festivities to share. 

These next pictures show Walt with California Governor Goodwin Knight, parading down Main Street, U.S.A. Can you guess which one was taken during the rehearsal?

In this rare photo, Walt practices the dedication of Fantasyland in the area just southwest of Sleeping Beauty Castle. I think his pride is so obvious in this photo. Don’t you just love the smile on his face?

Among others rehearsing for their part in the the big show were television host Art Linkletter, and “Davy Crockett” stars Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen, shown here in Frontierland before the broadcast.

Meanwhile, outside the entrance to Frontierland, actor and television personality Ronald Reagan was getting ready for his part in the landmark TV special.

Finally, a “prequel” photo of sorts. We’ve all seen the photo of children entering Fantasyland for the first time during the opening day broadcast. In this rare photo, those same children are seen from the other side of Sleeping Beauty Castle as they prepare for the big moment.

Disneyland Celebrates 56 Years Tomorrow

Search July 17 as a famous historical date and the year 1955 often pops up as opening day for Disneyland park. The park’s anniversary ranks alongside prominent moments in history, such as great sports achievements and the birthdays of important political figures. Disneyland has become a cultural icon, and the park’s opening day marks a milestone in family entertainment.

This year, Disneyland celebrates its 56th anniversary on July 17. It’s a very special day for cast members as well as guests, and the resort has commemorated it over the years with a variety of slogans and salutes, with celebrations big and small. Here’s a brief look back:

1965: “Tencennial Re-Dedication Day” featured the “Disneyland Tencennial Celebration Parade.”

1980: “I Was There!” birthday buttons were given to guests who attended the 25-hour anniversary party. (Those buttons are now collector’s items.)

1985: “Thirty years of Magic… the Best Has Just Begun” was the theme of a new parade. A theme song thanked Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck for “30 Happy Years.”

1990: Disneyland turned 35, “proof that the good things in life get only better.”

2005: “The Happiest Homecoming on Earth” paid tribute to the 50th anniversary, and the park handed out nearly 100,000 cupcakes during the huge celebration.

One of my favorite anniversary stories is from the park’s 10th Anniversary. Guests of an employee party said that Walt Disney congratulated them and offered this perspective: the first 10 years were a “dress rehearsal,” and anyone thinking about resting on their laurels could “just forget it.” 

This year on July 17, a celebratory moment will be held at 2:30 p.m. to commemorate the 56th anniversary of opening day. An audio recording of Walt Disney’s original dedication speech will be heard throughout Disneyland park. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and a cast of characters will gather in Town Square to sing “Happy Birthday” to Disneyland with guests and cast members.

Top 10 - Ice Cream Treats at Disney Parks

Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month (so proclaimed by President Reagan in 1984)? And National Ice Cream Day is the third Sunday in July – the 17th this year. 

It’s the perfect opportunity to daydream about our favorite ice cream treats at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. And while we love the simple, choco-dip Mickey Mouse ice cream bar from a street cart, or a double-dip cone, these are the treats that go far, far beyond – decadent and worth every calorie.

1. Any list has to begin with the Kitchen Sink at Beaches & Cream at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. So, you need a few pals to share, but it’s only eight scoops, every topping imaginable and a whole can of whipped cream.
2. Hands-down favorite shake is the peanut butter and jelly shake at 50’s Prime Time Cafe at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We’ve been known to skip the meal and just sip a tall shake at the bar at the adjacent Tune-In Lounge.
3. At Epcot, we head to Fountain View Ice Cream for a classic hot fudge sundae – whipped cream and a cherry, served in an edible waffle bowl. Need we say more?
4. Scoops are an easy parade treat, but we go all out with the Original Banana Split at The Plaza Restaurant in Magic Kingdom park: chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream topped with hot fudge, strawberry sauce, crushed pineapple, chopped nuts, whipped cream and a cherry. Yum!
5. When we’re shopping (or taking an intended detour) to Downtown Disney Marketplace, we make a beeline for Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop and order The Haight AshBerry Very Berry Sundae with strawberry cheesecake ice cream smothered with sliced strawberries under a layer of vanilla ice cream with blueberry topping, whipped cream, chocolate-covered blueberries and a chocolate dipped waffle roll. Well, at least there’s fruit.
6. The old-fashioned root beer float (we used to call it a “black cow”) quenches our thirst on a hot summer afternoon at Camp Soft Serve at Camp Mickey-Minnie at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The smooth vanilla soft serve ice cream melds with the kicky root beer and takes us back to childhood.
7. In Disneyland park, we always stop at Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor for the Firehouse Dalmatian Mint Sundae – two scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream served in a waffle cup and topped with whipped cream, chocolate chips and a cherry. Sometimes this is lunch!
8. At Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort, we love playing at ESPN Zone then ordering the chocolate chip cookie sundae – a Nestle Toll House cookie topped with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, caramel sauce and whipped cream. One more trip up the rock wall!
9. At PCH Grill at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, we eat light and then order the Splitsville Sundae with banana, three scoops of ice cream, caramel syrup (or you can choose chocolate), nuts or sprinkles. Plenty to share.
10. Our final pick, perhaps saving the best for last, is the Farmer’s Market Sundae at Catal at Downtown Disney District, an exquisite creation of balsamic ice cream with mint granita and mascarpone mousse. The sweet-tart ice cream, bracing granita and buttery mascarpone is a heavenly match.

Snapshots From Under the Sea

D23's Heather Ikei reveals additional photos from her pre-opening visit to The Little Mermaid — Ariel's Undersea Adventure with the animators — Andreas Deja, Mark Henn, and Glen Keane — who first made the film a part of our world.

I've spent a fair amount of time in the expansive lobby of Disney's Grand Californian Hotel. It's my haven and resting point at the resort, a place to break away during a day of running from one attraction to another during a visit to Disneyland or Disney California Adventure. And it's also my pick for an ideal space for meeting co-workers as we prepare for a day in the parks.

On this very special trip, I have the honor of meeting with the creative masters behind one of my favorite Disney films — The Little Mermaid — in the hotel lobby. Glen Keane and Mark Henn, both the supervising animators behind Ariel, and Andreas Deja, the supervising animator of King Triton, are gathered there. When I meet them they are chatting together as old friends. And after working together on The Little Mermaid more than 20 years ago and now getting to see their characters all come to life as a Disney park attraction, they have plenty to talk about. Since The Little Mermaid, the three animators' work can be seen just about everywhere, from films such as Aladdin and Tarzan to Tangled and the upcoming Winnie The Pooh.

After our introductions and a conversation about the traffic congestion on the 5 freeway from Burbank to Anaheim, we make our way into Disney California Adventure and wait outside the construction walls of The Little Mermaid — Ariel's Undersea Adventure. Even before we step into the construction space, the animators are already in awe by the architecture of the building. "King Triton!" Andreas yells, as he points to the large Triton statue that is centered on the attraction's arched entrance. A few minutes later, Larry Nikolai, show designer and creative director, Walt Disney Imagineering, donning Imagineering's signature hardhat and vest, pops his head out of one of the construction walls and motions for us to go inside. We're about to go fathoms below and into an under-the-sea world in the making.

Beginning on this day in 1956, guests were able to get a bird's eye view of Disneyland, for a quarter mile stretch between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland in the Skyway attraction. The new attraction debuted less than one year after the park first opened as part of a massive park enhancement. More than just a ride, this attraction served the purpose of saving the footsteps of guests as they were transported from one land to another. In later years, the Skyway was a welcome shortcut during parades, which made it more of a challenge to travel by foot. The Main Street Electrical Parade was a particular favorite site to see from above. Over the years, many guests would mistakenly refer to the attraction as the "sky buckets," but from this early photo above, it's easy to see the logic behind that. Future generations of the Skyway saw more modern gondolas, and when the iconic Matterhorn opened in 1959, guests literally traveled through the mountain, and decades later were able to get a peek at the "Abominable Snowman" character that continues to reside inside the attraction. In 1994, the Skyway took its last flight after transporting an estimated 150 million guests.

Today, May 4, we unveiled a stunning new piece of Star Tours art which serves as the attraction poster at Disneyland park and the marquee at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Designed by Imagineer Scot Drake, the piece features the new Starspeeder 1000 surrounded by many of the planets, vehicles and characters from the show. Look for Darth Vader lurking in the shadows.

The photo below shows the new marquee as it was being installed just this morning at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Adventures Continue – only weeks away!

The New Star Tours

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- From the time Star Tours debuted at Disneyland Park in 1987 and at Walt Disney World Resort in 1989 until the attraction went dark for "reimagining" in fall 2010, guests embarked on a journey to the Moon of Endor and beyond, with a trainee pilot named REX at the controls of 40-passenger Starspeeder 3000 spacecraft.

Now the Star Tours attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida (scheduled to reopen May 20) and at Disneyland Park in California (scheduled to reopen June 3) as Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, puts a whole new twist on virtual space travel with Starspeeder 1000 craft -- predating the Starspeeder 3000 because the new show depicts an earlier chapter of the Star Wars saga than the original Star Tours did. But fear not: Techno-wizards are equipping passengers on the 1000 with the ability to experience the new adventure in eye-popping 3D -- wherever that adventure may take them.

The destination is not necessarily what guests expect -- unless they expect the unexpected -- as C-3PO, a new pilot (by accident) takes the controls for a journey to the "metropolitan" planet Coruscant or to Tatooine an arid planet on the "Outer Rim," or to some other planet within Star Wars' mythical universe. Even the outcome of the adventure may change from one "launch" to the next.

Join Jack’s Crew Tonight for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – Sneak Peek’

Since its debut at Disneyland park in 1967, the Pirates of the Caribbean adventure has thrilled guests with its rollicking fun and detailed storytelling. The attraction inspired the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie in 2003, and now a new, engaging entertainment experience at Disneyland park will give guests an exclusive, 3D “peek” at the newest Pirates film.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – Sneak Peek” debuts tonight at Festival Arena, just after nightfall. In this exciting pirate experience, guests will join Captain Jack Sparrow and his rowdy crew for an extended film sequence from “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (opening May 20). 

Here’s a look at the Disney crew getting everything ready to hoist the sails. Show Director Glenn Kelman says he hopes guests “feel like they’ve become a Pirate of the Caribbean.”

As night falls, look for scallywags and pirates along Big Thunder Trail. Guests will start the adventure there and may be surprised to find a special, peg-legged parrot among the pirates. 

The “sneak peek” previews will begin after dusk and run continuously until park closing – weather permitting, of course.

If you can’t make it tonight, you can join Jack’s crew on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights through May 30, and seven nights a week from April 15 through May 1. You can find additional information on the Pirates of the Caribbean – Sneak Peek page.

Celebrating Valentine's Day at Walt Disney World

The romance of Valentine’s Day is spreading across the Disneyland Resort, and today we’re revealing some of that romance.

We asked guests in Disneyland park to share some of their romantic stories. One couple told us how they exchanged a ring under the fireworks. We also heard from newlyweds about their honeymoon plan, and another couple shared some tips for romantic dinners and attractions at the Parks.

Red and pink hearts are popping up everywhere for Valentine’s Day – they’re even at Disneyland park.

The Horticulture team at the Disneyland Resort is dressing up floral displays—including pink and red azaleas—with Valentine’s Day hearts, like the display shown here at Minnie’s House in Mickey’s Toontown. You can also see the Horticulture team’s creations at Town Square on Main Street, U.S.A.

If you’re not visiting the parks this week, I’ve heard the horticulture team is planning some other fun surprises for St. Patrick’s Day in March and Independence Day in July.

Even if you’re not visiting on a holiday, take a closer look at the plants and flowers around the Resort. You just might be surprised by what you find.

A Unique Anniversary Party

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it seemed like a good time to share a photo I recently saw for the first time. It’s from a unique anniversary party of two sweethearts: Walt and Lillian Disney. They are photographed with their daughters, Diane and Sharon, around a huge cake inside the yet-to-be-opened Golden Horseshoe on July 13, 1955, just four days before the official opening of Disneyland park.

It was the ultimate celebration. Three hundred guests were invited to celebrate Walt and Lillian’s 30th wedding anniversary. Invitees included Spencer Tracy, Cary Grant and Gary Cooper. Can you imagine getting this invitation?

WHERE: Disneyland . . . where there’s plenty of room . . .
WHEN: . . . Wednesday, July 13, 1955, at six o’clock in the afternoon . . .
WHY: . . . because we’ve been married Thirty Years . . .
HOW: . . . by cruising down the Mississippi on the Mark Twain’s maiden voyage, followed by dinner at Slue-Foot-Sue’s Golden Horseshoe!
Hope you can make it – we especially want you and, by the way, no gifts, please – we have everything, including a grandson.

If you’ve haven’t heard the story, party guests piled into horse-drawn surreys and were taken down Main Street and into Frontierland where they boarded the Mark Twain Riverboat and sipped mint juleps. At the Golden Horseshoe Saloon (as it was called then), guests were treated to the very first, but unofficial, performance of the Golden Horseshoe Revue, created by Wally Boag, the original Pecos Bill.

Next time you visit Frontierland, step inside the Golden Horseshoe and imagine what that anniversary party might have been like nearly 55 years ago.

Love Is In The Air at the Disneyland Resort: Romantic Locations

Happy Valentine’s Day! Our treat for you today is a list of romantic spots around the Disneyland Resort.

Sleeping Beauty Castle – So many fairy tales begin in the forecourt of this iconic castle at Disneyland park. Hardly a day goes by without one or two future grooms leaning nervously on bended knee before his princess-to-be.

Snow White Grotto (adjacent to the Castle forecourt) – Making a wish with your special someone is always a lovely idea, and the wishing well located in Snow White Grotto is perhaps one of the loveliest places to do so – especially if you are the prince (or princess) they’ve been wishing for.

Court des Anges, New Orleans Square – Located between the Blue Bayou Restaurant and the New Orleans Square Railroad Station, this “Court of Angels” is a secluded courtyard with picturesque winding staircases that create a beautiful setting for a quiet interlude.

Disneyland Hotel Rose Court Garden – Often the site of weddings, these romantic gardens are a sweet-smelling locale for a romantic stroll. This semi-secluded getaway spot is near the Wonder Tower.

Main Street, U.S.A. Railroad Station – Many Disneyland guests agree that trains are romantic. The observation deck of the train station affords a spectacular view of Main Street, U.S.A. and beyond, onto Sleeping Beauty Castle.

At Disney Parks, we believe in happy endings – and we’re also fond of fairy tale beginnings. Whether you’re looking for a sweet spot to make a proposal or just a quiet nook to wish upon a star, there are some great places to be with the one you love. Brisa Courtyard at Disney’s Grand California Hotel & Spa – This forested oasis is just steps from the Downtown Disney District, outside the luxurious hotel. If you’re planning a visit to this location, consider including a couples retreat to the hotel spa or a romantic dinner for two at the award-winning Napa Rose restaurant.

Paradise Pier Observation Deck – Located in Disney California Adventure park and overlooking the bright lights and bustling fun of Paradise Pier, this location sits above Paradise Bay and is adjacent to Ariel’s Grotto. If your mind is turning to a proposal, consider popping the question during the Love sequence of “World of Color,” just as the romantic melody of “So Close” from Walt Disney Pictures’ “Enchanted” accompanies a montage of Disney’s most romantic film moments.

Here are some great tips if your upcoming trip to the Disneyland Resort includes a special romantic date or popping the question. If you are at a PhotoPass location, alert the attendant to capture your big moment professionally. If you choose a more secluded location, consider alerting the attraction or any nearby cast member to assist you with your personal camera, or help provide you a moment of privacy. Cast members at any of the Resort’s table-service restaurants are a great resource, too. Make your reservations well in advance and then ask to speak with a manager to assist in coordinating a special moment or table-service dinner proposal.

With Valentine’s Day only days away, how many of you are feeling the pressure to find that special someone the perfect gift? If you’re like me, the quickest way to my heart is with sugary treats – and Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to indulge in sweet treats from the Candy Kitchens.
For those with a little more of a sweet tooth, I have the perfect recipe for finding something you’ll love. I took one for the team and taste-tested all of our holiday treats to pick the best for your Valentine. Here are the top five “sweet treats” that are “in store” for you and your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day!

5. Festively decorated cupcakes (Yum! Need I say more?)
4. Chocolate-dipped rice crispy treats (Always a crowd pleaser.)

Valentine Flowers at Disneyland Resort

Flowers or candy? It’s the great Valentine’s Day decision.

I adore chocolate, but on Valentine’s Day I always prefer flowers. That’s why I get to tell you about the new floral displays at the Disneyland Resort this month. (My colleagues will tell you all about sweet treats at the Resort later this week.)

The horticulture team is dressing up Disneyland park with beautiful yellow tulips, pink pansies, red azaleas and more. The floral displays include Valentine-sculpted hearts in the planters at Town Square. The hearts are reminiscent of Victorian Valentine cards, as some have a lace pattern and others have stained-glass highlights.

Here’s what to look for around the park:

At Town Square: pink tulips near the flagpole, yellow tulips and pink pansies in the lawns, pink and red azaleas in the bench planters, and needlepoint ivy climbing up the two-foot high Valentine-sculpted hearts.

At the Hub, on Main Street, U.S.A.: pink double-tulips at the Partner’s Statue; pink, yellow and white tulips with a daffodil mix; and baskets with shades of pink and yellow.

Minnie’s House in Mickey’s Toontown: A three-foot tall Valentine heart sculpture appears to be growing straight up through Minnie’s garden on her front lawn, and it’s surrounded by pink and red azaleas.

If you’re not visiting the parks this month, the horticulture team does amazing work throughout the year with holiday-themed décor, exquisite topiaries and the ever-changing “Floral Mickey” at the entrance to Disneyland park.

Here’s a quick look at some of the beautiful flowers and gardens that celebrate Valentine’s Day and add a festive touch to the Disneyland Resort.

Valentine’s Day Roses at Walt Disney World Resort

Looking to express your affection in a big way this Valentine’s Day? Take a look at this year’s jaw-dropper.

That’s five feet of roses created with a special touch here at Disney Floral and Gifts. If you’re one of those over-the-top romantics, this will most certainly render your loved one speechless. It’s so big, we use a special delivery truck to transport it to your Walt Disney World Resort room.

Another one of my favorites for Valentine’s Day is our special Disney Dozen bouquet with a special surprise. We add a surprise “wishing rose” sprinkled with pixie dust and showcased in sparkling gold ribbon smack dab in the middle of 12 velvety red roses.

Look close and you’ll notice our rose bouquets have something in common – amazing presentation. It’s one of our secrets to transforming a simple bouquet into a memorable experience.

So, what’s the ultimate presentation? For me, it’s rose petals sprinkled throughout your room. If you’re looking to win a heart this holiday, that’ll do the trick and it’s easy to make happen at the resorts.

A Table for Two for Valentine’s Day at Walt Disney World

From an over-the-top romantic cruise to a sublime sundae for two at Ghirardelli at Downtown Disney, we’ve come up with a half-dozen offbeat ways to woo your valentine Disney-style.

If the sky’s the limit, book Grand 1, the 52-foot yacht at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. You’ll float around Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake – with a front-row seat for the Magic Kingdom “Wishes Nighttime Spectacular” fireworks if you book that magical hour. Call 407-WDW-PLAY for reservations. Cost for rental is $520 plus tax. Dining aboard (additional cost) is arranged through private dining at the resort.

Victoria and Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa takes top prize for fancy-schmancy. Men, if you want to wear a jacket and treat your date to a formal dining affair, this is the place. A harpist sets the tone for the 6-course prix-fixe menu that changes almost nightly. Plan on at least two hours to dazzle your date with fab tastes from around the globe. $125 per person, wine pairings $60. Call 407-939-3862 for reservations.

How about caviar and lobster for two? Book your table at Narcoossee’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Tucked along the waterfront, you can step out on the back deck for a view of the dazzling Magic Kingdom fireworks. For meat lovers, Chef Joe Wilson is offering filet mignon Oscar for two with jumbo lump crab, asparagus and béarnaise. End with a couple of luscious chocolate crepes. Narcoossee’s has a fabulous wine list and will do the pairing for you.


On a budget? Book a table for lunch between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Tutto Italia Ristorante at Italy Pavilion in Epcot World Showcase and be whisked away to a boisterous Italian trattoria for a three-course lunch for just $19.75 each (and not just on Valentine’s Day). Start with a salad, minestrone or fresh mozzarella, then spaghetti alla carbonara, veal saltimbocca or cheese ravioli with prosciutto and cream sauce. For a sweet ending, it’s a crispy cannoli with candied fruit. Take a stroll through the shops and maybe splurge on a Murano glass necklace.

For absolute decadence, we splurge on a bowl of the oyster and Brie soup finished with Champagne at The Hollywood Brown Derby at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. You can share a Famous Brown Derby Cobb Salad, or continue the feast – Madeira braised lamb shank…butter brown almond-crusted black grouper…short ribs braised in Samuel Adams beer…but whatever you choose, save room to share a slice of the legendary Grapefruit Cake.

And if your sweetheart has a real sweet tooth, cut to the chase with a gargantuan sundae from Ghirardelli at Downtown Disney. Wild horses couldn’t us drag away from The Gold Rush, a peanut butter hot fudge sundae with vanilla ice cream, peanut butter melting throughout. Add a topping of whipped cream, chopped almonds, a cherry and Ghirardelli milk chocolate squares. Call it a cheap date.

Cuddle Up This Valentine’s Day at Disney Parks

What Disney characters inspire love? That question is something Denise Edelmaier, Product Developer for Dolls and Plush, asked as she began developing this year’s Valentine’s Day plush. I’m thinking she also asked how much cuteness she could add this year as these plush are adorable. I particularly love all of the details to which I learned is all part of storytelling.

“Each year, I like including Mickey and Minnie in our Valentine’s Day plush assortment,” explained Denise. “They are the quintessential Disney couple. Mickey and Minnie have a retro look this year which complements their festive attire well. That retro or vintage look is very popular in the marketplace right now.”

The colorful pink and red fabric that Denise mentions is found in elements on all four plush – from Duffy’s shorts to Minnie’s hat to Bolt’s collar. I particularly like the rose in Bolt’s mouth (then again, I’m a romantic).

“Last year, we created Marie from ‘The Aristocats’ for Valentine’s Day,” explained Monty Maldovan, the Disney Design Group artist responsible for developing artwork for plush. “This year, it made sense to have a dog like Bolt. I added some fun details to him like a heart with lightning bolt or the collar tag that says, ‘Love Struck.’”

Now that is funny. I enjoyed discovering those details once I got past the initial “he is so cute” reaction I first had while photographing him.

Another detail I liked finding was the quiver of arrows on Duffy’s back. I’m guessing that Cupid now carries a quiver of Duffy the Disney Bears like the one pictured at the top. Once again, he is too cuddly and cute (who wouldn’t fall in love holding him?).

Monty continued his thoughts about development.

“We started developing these items around Valentine’s Day last year,” said Monty. “The challenge for me was finding ways to incorporate that unique fabric print. We didn’t want any of the print to go to waste. I’m happy with the results as the plush look great together. Yet they are even stronger as individual items.”

I asked Denise if she had a glimpse into Valentine’s Day 2012.

“There will be two items next year featuring some beautiful nighttime dogs,” answered Denise. “But that is all I can say for now.”

In the beginning, only couples with a valid California or Florida marriage license could purchase its wedding packages but, since 2007 even gay couples can have a commitment ceremony and they added the Honeymoon service.

People propose at Disney Parks all the time, so… nothing is more natural than get married there too.

According to wedding industry experts, Walt Disney World Resort is Recognized as a top-ranked honeymoon destination and destination weddings venue.

The sky is the limit for themed weddings - from an enchanting Cinderella-like wedding in Magic Kingdom or a Hollywood extravaganza in Disney’s Hollywood Studios to international-themed nuptials at Epcot or a safari-themed reception at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

More than 1,600 couples from every state in America and from international locations wish to tie the knot at Florida or California every year.

The most widely used location for weddings, vow renewals and commitment ceremonies, is the Disney’s Wedding Pavilion on the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon, inside the Grand Floridian Resort.

The first wedding at Disney’s Wedding Pavilion was televised live June 18, 1995, on Lifetime Television as part of its “Weddings of a Lifetime” series.

The Imagineers designed it in a special way… you can see Cinderella’s Castle behind the altar and through a arch outside the chapel.

“The pavilion gives couples an elegant indoor setting with the romance of Cinderella Castle visible in the distance,” said George Aguel, vice president resort sales, planning and development, Walt Disney Attractions.

“Through the years, hundreds of couples have requested to get married in the theme parks,” said Randy Garfield, executive vice president of sales and travel operations, Walt Disney Attractions. “We have expanded our offerings and designed a one-of-a-kind wedding program to fulfill those special requests.”

Weddings at Walt Disney World Resort’s most famous venues are limited only by the imagination of the couples. Here are several possibilities:

Magic Kingdom

            The romance of the fairy tale is captured as a bride, dressed in a specially designed Cinderella gown, arrives in a horse-drawn carriage. A fairy tale major domocarries the wedding rings in a glass slipper, a trumpeter heralds the bride’s entrance with favorite Disney fanfare and an elegant string quartet sets the scene. Couples exchange vows at the Rose Garden with Cinderella Castle as the backdrop for the ultimate fairy tale celebration in a place where dreams really do come true.

Epcot

            Couples can choose from several venues around World Showcase -- The American Adventure, United Kingdom, France or Italy -- for an international festival featuring specialized food and entertainment. At The Seas with Nemo and Friends, a 5.7-million-gallon tank featuring more than 200 varieties of sea life is the backdrop for couples.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

            Screaming fans and autograph hounds set the scene. The bride arrives in a star motorcade down Hollywood Boulevard for an official handprint ceremony at the Chinese Theater. A reception follows in the Great Movie Ride attraction. The evening can end with “Sorcery in the Sky” fireworks featuring a personalized pyro show. Couples can even “take the plunge” -- literally and figuratively -- on The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

            Weddings are exotic at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. Couples can take their guests on an adventure into the wild with a safari-themed reception. Imagine African music, food and décor to inspire a beautiful African celebration.

Princesses Rings

Disney launched a line of wedding diamond rings inspired by the Princesses, including: Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Princess Jasmine from “Aladdin,” Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” and Belle from “Beauty and the Beast.”

The sparklers retail for $1,200 to $6,000.

Wedding prices begin at $4,500 for an Escape Wedding Collection gathering for two. Wishes Wedding Collection ceremonies start at $10,000 for 20 guests or more. An average wedding at Disney is approximately $20,000 for 50 people.

Disney’s Honeymoon Registry, which launched Feb. 14, 2007, is a complimentary online service that allows couples to create a gift registry for components of an all-inclusive honeymoon to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship, or at select Disney Vacation Club Resorts.

Have you ever attended a Disney’s Fairytale Wedding? I did about 11 years ago when a dear friend was married at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. It was such a magical event – I mean, who wouldn’t want to get married in the happiest place on earth? With Valentine’s Day approaching, I figured there may be some of you ready to tie the knot (or at least ask “that” big question). If you have been reading Korri McFann’s articles, then you are aware of the many opportunities we offer to create special wedding moments. But what do you give the happy couple? I walked the hallways of Disney Theme Park Merchandise and found several items with one common theme – a bride and groom Disney Ear Hat.

Megan Kachur, developer for ear hats, said the hats have been around forever (perhaps they were married long ago). These hats served as the inspiration for an entire art program developed by David Whitaker, Product Developer for Home and Décor.

“I chose the ear hats as I wanted a wedding message that was related to our Disney Parks,” said David. “I’ve seen many honeymoon couples at Disney who love wearing those hats, so it made sense to have an assortment featuring those icons.”

For the ear-hat art program, there are a variety of items including pins (the ultra portable item to inform others you are the happy couple); photo albums and wedding frames to capture memories from the special day; and my favorite item – coffee cups. Those cups sure make it easy to identify who gets what cup in the morning (especially when one is a little sleepy).

Another common theme I discovered was Minnie and Mickey portrayed as a bride and groom. There are some new figurines that look incredible (especially Minnie’s wedding gown). David shared some additional details.

“Minnie’s wedding gown has a pearlescent finish which makes it shimmer,” explained David. “I think the ‘over the threshold’ figure is my favorite. It is not only a great gift but I’ve seen people use it as a cake topper.”

My final (possibly favorite) thing I found was sitting on Maria Clapsis’ desk at Disney Design Group. Maria is one of our artists who designs Vinylmation figures. She created a one-of-a-kind custom Vinylmation set for her friends who were tying the knot. Talk about a personalized gift – wow!

When I walked into our shop this morning, I took time to “smell the roses.”

Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday. And even though I have been here at Disney Floral & Gifts for 8 years, I’m always so impressed with the volume of beautiful Disney bouquets we create. Disney has perfected the art of designing and delivering mass bouquets to guests all over Disney property – it’s really quite impressive. So with you in mind, I quickly got a hold of one of our Disney Fine Art photographers, Regina Blaney, to shoot some images to share with you.

As you walk into our shop, the room is filled with roses, mixed floral and rose bouquets that are being prepped and designed for delivery today to the resorts. As we get closer to Valentine’s day, it will get even busier…and it’s wonderful.

In a recent post, I featured our “Disney Dozen” rose bouquet. It’s our most popular floral gift which features the wishing rose in the center.

Here are the wishing roses, freshly sprinkled with pixie dust by Tinker Bell. Yes, she really does visit our shop each day.
