It seems Karthi is following his brother Surya’s footsteps when it comes to choosing the scripts and working hard on the characters. The actor, who has given four superhit movies till date, is back with Siruthai and has paired with Tamanna Bhatia again. The audience has huge expectations on this movie. Now, let us see whether the movie has met the expectations     or     not.

Story:

Rocket Raja (Karthi) and Pattu Poochi (Santhanam) are small time thieves, who cheat and steal valuables from every given opportunity. They do anything and everything to make quick bucks. Once, they attend a wedding ceremony to rob but Rocket Raja, who saw Shwetha (Tamanna) at the function, falls in love
immediately. As expected, after a series of incidents, they start seeing each other. However, the situation turns serious when a little girl (baby Rakshana) claims that he is her father. Raja tries to find out the truth and discovers that the girl is the daughter of an IPS officer Rathinavel Pandian (Karthi) and he gets killed in front of Raja during a fight against dons. What happens next should be seen on-screen.

Performance:

Karthi has given an excellent performance. His comedy and one-liners as Rocket Raja and his killer looks of a tough cop Rathinavle Pandian steals the hearts of the audience. He has done two contradicting characters with ease. Santhanam is at his usual best and tickles funny bones of the audience. Tamanna has given her best even though she has a limited role to play in the film. Music by Vidyasagar has become popular even before the release of the film. Cinematography by Velraj is good. Especially, the camera works in action scenes make a good watch. Director Siva should be credited for bringing out the best from his team.

Remarks:

You can watch the film with your family because of the entertaining elements. It has a perfect mix of romance, action, fun, comedy, glamour and sentiments. It is a perfect Pongal treat for Kollywood audience. Do not miss this movie!

Aattanayagan Review

The film is an all out action drama filled with dollops of emotions, sentiments and romance to keep everyone happy. Though its old wine in new bottles as far as the story goes, it must be said that it’s a neatly packaged family entertainer, sans any vulgarity, with everything meted out in just the right doses.

Story:
The story revolves around a young man (Shakti) and his family in a small town. The elder brother (Aditya) is a successful IT professional in Hyderabad while our hero is waiting to go abroad for a job. In the meanwhile he earns the wrath of his father (Nazar) who doesn’t like him fighting with everyone and being a general good for nothing. Only his mom is supportive.

A love angle enters in the form of heroine Ramya Nambeesan and all goes well until her sister is married to his brother in Hyderabad in a twist of events. What happens thereafter, when many unpleasant facts come to light forms the story.

What works:
The director has kept everything in just the right amount in the film. So there as a comedy track with Santhanam and Lollu Sabha Jeeva, a love angle that’s important to the storyline, villains to keep up the action and plenty of family drama and sentiment to keep ladies happy.
Shakthi and the entire cast perform really well and that’s the strength of the film. And the Telugu speaking villains add a different touch than the usual dialogues. Songs are well picturised and the music is foot tapping.
Shakthi emerges as a good action hero though thankfully all punch dialogues have been kept away! The fights are apt and in just the right places and will justification.
What doesn’t work :
It’s the same old story of good brother, bad brother…
Verdict: Worth watching once

There was enough curiosity over ‘Easan’ as it is the second film of Sasikumar after the cult ‘Subramaniapuram’ in 2008.
In his second film after two years, Sasikumar has set his focus on Chennai, its urban posh life, its merits and demerits. In the process he has touched upon the life styles of different social classes and their behaviors.
Before the release of this film Sasikumar had said, you can’t slot ‘Easan’ as a thriller or a love story. He was right and very right.

The story begins as a love story, then turns a thriller and then turns a revenge transgression and ends as a social crime novel. Sasikumar has handled the mix of genus rather well except for the length of the movie. A good three hours seems a bit dreary.
Story wise ‘Easan’ is not very innovative. It is a revenge for the killing of a girl after rape by a politician’s son and an honest police officer investigates the case braving pressures from the politico family.
Suspense is maintained till the interval as to who the killer could be. As a clever director, Sasikumar makes you change your guess every time with a lot of characters and sub scenes. In fact, the game of guessing with a collage of incidents keeps the first half intact.
The story of ‘Easan’ is built by the characters and there is no hero or heroine or a villain or a comedian. Samuthirakani is not the hero, Abhinaya is not the heroine and AL Azhagappan is not the villain, There are around 20 characters and all characters play up to the story.
Casting is also a reason for the sincerity of the film. Samuthirakani as the police officer is subtle and focused. AL Azhagappan as the politician doesn’t look like a first timer. Vaibhav as a spoiled brat son of the politician and Abhinaya as the village girl turning a fashionable city girls are as good as always. Even the other characters those of new comer Aparna, Blessy, Niranjan & Nammo Narayana are good.
James Vasanthan has brought in a good dose of western flavor mixed with local music, which is new and interesting. But placing of most songs look they are item numbers and doesn’t blend with the story telling. But then James Vasanthan always played music to the story without looking for showcasing individual brilliance.

Technically the best done is the cinematography by SR Kathiir. His camera has captured the city night life and the village innocence in two distinctive styles, particularly the discotheque scenes and the opening village sequences. If at all there is one thing you would want to change is the editing. Many scenes could have been crisper and cliched shots removed. The tedious lengths of scenes in many places actually destabilize the intentions of the director.

‘Easan’ is good by its scenes but knitting them could have been a little more compelling and pragmatic. You may be a little disillusioned if you go to ‘Easan’ expecting the magic of ‘Subramaniapuram’. But then ‘Easan’ is a paradigm shift.
We still believe Sasikumar is a great director capable of repeating the magic of ‘Subramaniapuram’. We wait for his third film eagerly.
